HUNTING ELEPHANT IN ZIMBABWE WITH MATTANJA HUNTING SAFARIS
Elephant hunting is one of the most thrilling experiences you'll ever have! The African Elephant is the world's largest land mammal standing at more than 12 feet at the shoulder and weighing in excess of 13 000 pounds. Elephants have relatively poor eyesight but have excellent hearing and a keen sense of smell, despite their size, their dark greyish skin provides excellent camouflage in the dense vegetation! Depending on an Elephants' diet, a bull has a lifespan of between 50 and 70 years.
Bulls are usually found in small bachelor herds or alone and occasionally with a herd of cows. The oldest bulls are the ones we target and the best to take because they are well past their breeding age, most probably on their last set of teeth and have spread their genes. Elephant hunting is usually done on foot by following fresh spoor. Elephants cover a great distance and tracking Elephant can be long and physically challenging.
The .375 H&H Magnum is the legal minimum required caliber for hunting Elephant, but there will be no room for error! A .40 caliber rifle with 400 grain to 500 grain bullets will be ideal, but use the the rifle that you shoot the most comfortable with! If a .375 is what you're used to and shoot the best then it will get the job done. No matter the caliber you use, a premium solid bullet is essential for this type of hunt!
A shot between 20 and 40 yards is average and You're Professional Hunter guiding you on the hunt will go over shot placement with you, but studying shot placement before you're Safari can be an advantage! Tusk weight to expect depends a lot on the area! In Matetsi a bull of between 35 to 40lbs a side can be expected, Chibwedzivha bigger bulls can be expected and a bull of between 55 and 90lbs can be a realistic expectation
Travel options to get to the hunting concession would be to fly to OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa and take a connecting flight to Victoria Falls International Airport or Bulawayo Airport depending where you're hunting Safaris is.
On every Safari you will be greeted at the airport by myself, or one of my handpicked Professional Hunters. If you require overnight accommodation in Johannesburg, I highly recommend Africa Sky Guesthouse.
